When It’s Done: The Making of a Chef

Gretchen Hanson has turned up the heat!

Gretchen Hanson, award-winning chef and former owner of Hobos Restaurant and Bar in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, has stepped away from the stove long enough to write a unique and entertaining cookbook, When It’s Done: The Making of a Chef.

More than just a book of recipes When It’s Done is a poignant, layered memoir, each chapter designed to soothe, seduce, comfort and embrace the reader. Using the language of food with a dose of acerbic wit, Hanson pens raw and honest stories intent upon feeding the hungry soul. Skillfully chronicling her circuitous journey with wrenching honesty and deprecating humor she blends the making of a chef with the basic ingredients of learning to live a life from scratch.

The reader will be entertained, enlightened, and shocked by tales of the sordid back alley ways found behind every restaurant kitchen; the seductive passion of the nightly line; the egocentric narcissism of the culinary profession.  All stories of what can happen when we break free from the traditional bonds that define us.

Hanson shares that “This book teaches people, not just how to cook, but also how healing oneself through loving food is their first and best medicine”

Each Chapter in When It’s Done: The Making of a Chef softly folds in the stories from Hanson’s’ life with her signature dishes. Hanson’s “global eco fusion” style is a cumulative result of her classic French cuisine training with a focus on plant-based meals and her travels around the world where she embraced the many advantages of local ingredients farmed sustainably.

When asked to sum up her book Hanson said: “My goal is to educate and heal while helping others gain a love and passion for cooking whole foods from scratch.  I want people to embrace #foodislove since it is our first and more natural way to care for ourselves and others.”

Join Hanson for her book release on Friday, November 16th at 6 – 9 pm with a champagne reception and book signing at 36 Rehoboth Avenue on the second floor of Grotto Pizza.
